Simba’s Castles was created from the love and adoration for our best friend Simba and we would like to share the story of how Simba’s Castles was born.
My name is Harrison Hays and I started Simba's Castles. It all began from my beautiful wife because she had always adored and desperately wanted a Pomeranian so I surprised her one birthday with our new best friend who she named Simba. From the minute we first met Simba we were both totally wrapped around his tiny paw and we wanted to do anything possible to make him as happy, healthy and comfortable as possible.
Looking back I can honestly say that I was not very excited about the idea of a Pomeranian since all I really knew about them was their stereotypes, but I was willing to give them a chance. I always owned bigger dogs and my last dog, a free spirited Siberian Husky, was sadly lost to cancer and I was also craving a new canine companion. There were some similarities between Poms and Huskies that I liked and I love seeing my wife happy so I knew that I would soon be living with a tiny lap dog.

The day we got Simba we had a choice of three puppies; Two females and one male. Both the females were about twice Simba’s size but they were all healthy, lively and adorable. With the crate door open one female started playing with some of the other puppies, the other female stayed in the back of the crate but Simba immediately headed our way. He wobbled over to where we were sitting, curiously smelled our fingers and then laid on his back begging for a belly rub. After the belly rub, and that look in my wife’s eyes, I knew Simba was the one.
We created a small space in our home for Simba by purchasing a typical metal crate, a dog bed, food, treats and of course LOTS OF TOYS! We set up the crate (with a dog bed) in our bedroom, a dog bed in our living room and his food and water in the kitchen. Simba was potty trained in no time and once he could be trusted we let home roam the house while we were away and did not confine him to his crate. As Simba and our bond with him grew we became more in tune with everything about him, including his sleeping and napping habits.
We first noticed that when we slept Simba would go to bed with us and sleep at our feet, but he would be under our bed in the morning. We were not sure if he was jumping off of during the night or if we were kicking him off in our sleep so we built a ramp and now he can come and go as he pleases. After we installed the ramp we noticed that in the morning he was back under the bed. This told us that he was leaving because he wanted to and not from us kicking him off while we slept.

During the day Simba also sleeps under our bed if he is extremely tired but there are other areas he uses to nap if he is just lounging around. We noticed that if we are in the living room, Simba does not use the dog bed but instead he would lie in the connected dining room under the table. We also noticed that when we were gone he would go into our laundry room, which is a dark and isolated room, and sleep in the small space behind the open door. If the laundry room door was closed he would go to our bedroom and under our bed.
One night my wife, Simba and I were hanging out and we began discussing Simba’s funny little routines and his sleeping habits were mentioned. We both noticed that he did not use his dog bed in the living room or the bed in his crate but he wanted locations that were dark and enclosed and that's when we realized the Simba was searching for his den. This made sense because a dogs natural instinct are to be den animals so they seek out a den within the home for a place they feel is safe and secure and where they know they can retreat to when they are stressed.or to simply be left alone to relax.
So after we realized that Simba was searching for his den my wife mentioned that Simba needed a doghouse and that's how it all began. A place where Simba was "King of the Castle". We searched online for an indoor den but the only products available were either really cheap and ugly or extremely extravagant and highly priced so we decided to build our own. I am a very detail oriented person and only go full speed so as I built his castle it kept getting more and more details like the miniature statues in the recessed walls, the motion activated lights, marble tile, trim, and the realistic shingled roof.
Once it was completed we put it in our living room and then it was time for the test; would Simba use it? It was almost like he knew it was for him right from the beginning and he started using it right away. If we were in the living room, he was in his castle. It wasn't long before i had built another one for our bedroom too. He looked really cute and funny with his little eyes staring out from the back in his castle and sometimes he would lay there with his head in the doorway watching our every move. After seeing Simba's Castle it wasn't long before I had requests for more castles and the rest is history.
